Root Canal Surgery (Apicoectomy) in Toronto
Root canal surgery (apicoectomy) involves making a small opening opposite the tip of the root to deal with persistent inflammation or infection associated with a previously treated tooth that has not responded well to non-surgical therapy. A small amount of root tip may also be removed in the process called apicoectomy, and a small filling can be placed in the root tip to seal it. It is a safe and effective procedure that can be performed accurately and quickly in most cases. It is done with local freezing and is painless.
When Is Root Canal Surgery Necessary?
An apicoectomy is recommended when a standard root canal fails to resolve an infection. This may happen if the tooth’s root canals are blocked or unusually shaped, if the root is cracked or damaged, or if repeated root canal treatments have not cleared the infection. Root canal surgery is considered a minor surgery that saves the tooth from extraction.
The Benefits of Root Canal Surgery
Apicoectomy has a high success rate, especially when performed by an experienced endodontist. If successful, it can help preserve the natural tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction. However, in some cases, tooth extraction may still be necessary if the infection cannot be fully controlled. This procedure is considered a last resort when other methods of root canal treatment have not worked.
