An Endodontist is a dentist with advanced training to effectively diagnose and treat both odontogenic (tooth-related) and non-odontogenic (non-tooth-related) head and neck pain. They have advanced training to provide root canal therapy, root canal surgery, and the treatment of traumatic injuries of the dental pulp and surrounding structures. This training is a minimum of 2 years, but most often three years beyond dental school.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment or root canal therapy—also referred to as non-surgical endodontic treatment—involves the diagnosis and treatment of the soft tissue within each tooth, called the dental pulp. In the case where the pulp is deemed irreversibly damaged or infected, then it needs to be removed.
Root Canal Retreatment
After a root canal procedure, your treated tooth will last a lifetime with proper care. In rare scenarios, it is possible for a treated tooth to heal improperly. The tooth can become painful or diseased months or even years after the first treatment. In these cases, your tooth can still be saved with a second root canal or root canal re-treatment.
Root Canal Surgery (Apicoectomy)
Root canal surgery (apicoectomy) involves making a small opening opposite the tip of the root to deal with persistent inflammation or infection associated with a previously treated tooth that has not responded well to non-surgical therapy. A small amount of root tip may also be removed in the process called apicoectomy, and a small filling can be placed in the root tip to seal it. It is a safe and effective procedure that can be performed accurately and quickly in most cases. It is done with local freezing and is painless.
Dental Trauma
The majority of dental trauma or dental injuries are minor, resulting in chipped teeth. More serious injuries are less common and include dislodged teeth or teeth that are completely knocked out. Regardless of severity, all traumatic dental injuries require urgent attention by a dentist or endodontist. If you’ve been in an accident or experienced a sports injury to the face, book an emergency dental appointment as soon as you can.
Cracked Teeth
A cracked tooth can happen at any time, from an unexpected injury to biting down on a hard food to wear and tear over time. The symptoms you can experience can also range from erratic pain when you bite down to sudden pain when your tooth is exposed to hot or cold temperatures. In many cases, the pain may come and go, which makes it challenging for your dentist to find the location of your discomfort. As endodontists, we have tools and techniques to find the damage and provide the right treatment.
Dental Emergencies
A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, trauma, or damage to the teeth, gums, or mouth that requires immediate attention. Examples include knocked-out teeth, severe toothaches, cracked or fractured teeth, and infections that cause swelling. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent further complications. In the event of a dental emergency, contact a dentist or endodontist as soon as possible.
Tooth Whitening
There are many causes of tooth discolouration, from eating and drinking staining foods to habits like smoking to dental trauma and previous root canal treatments. While you may find at-home teeth whitening solutions or have a dentist who offers teeth whitening treatment, not all teeth respond to these procedures. If you’ve tried other whitening methods and found them ineffective, you may be an ideal candidate for an endodontic teeth whitening treatment.
