Root Canal Re-Treatment in Toronto
After a root canal procedure, your treated tooth will last a lifetime with proper care. In rare scenarios, it is possible for a treated tooth to heal improperly. The tooth can become painful or diseased months or even years after the first treatment. In these cases, your tooth can still be saved with a second root canal or root canal re-treatment.
The Re-Treatment Procedure
Similar to the first root canal, your endodontist will clear out and clean out the root canals to ensure the infection or damaged tissues are removed. Once the canals are disinfected, they will be filled again and sealed off to prevent future infection. A new dental crown will be placed over the natural tooth to protect the tooth from future damage. Proper oral hygiene can help prevent reinfection.
What Causes Reinfection?
There are several possible causes that can lead to reinfection. The first treatment might have missed areas within a complicated canal system, or delays in placing the dental crown might lead to infection starting in the gums. New damage to your tooth or crown or new decay surrounding the tooth can also lead to reinfection below the surface. If you’re experiencing sustained tooth pain or gum pain around a previous root canal site, consult your dentist or your endodontist.
